Teaching primary school kids about poverty
Hi! We have developed a pack of resources to use in primary schools here in the UK, which we hope will give teachers and pupils an insight into the charity work carried out by Penny Appeal as well as showing the challenges faced by children in the Third World. The resources will cover the Key Stages for Education for pupils aged 3-11 and will be downloadable from our website: www.pennyappeal.org. If you are a teacher of children aged 6-7 (that's Key Stage 1 in the UK), then we would love to have your feedback on our lesson plan about poverty.
We have aimed for the lesson to last about an hour but have also provided opportunities for extending the time spent on the topic if teachers wish to continue. The resources include a lesson plan summary as well as a more detailed guidance, which explains the background and activities. We are in the process of developing a slideshow of photographs that can be used in classrooms but should you need any examples of these, please take a look at the Gallery on the Penny Appeal website: http://www.pennyappeal.org/gallery.html
We would love to hear your views on the lesson plan. Is it age appropriate? Engaging? Will it give pupils a real sense of the differences between their lives and those of children in the Third World? Are there too many/too few activities for the time allocated? Any general comments are also very welcome. Many thanks!
