Statistics reveal that: 2/3 of families begun by young mothers are poor; 25% of teen mothers go on welfare within 3 years of the child's birth; only 1/3 of teen mothers obtain a high school diploma; and babies born to teen mothers are more likely to have health problems at birth, suffer from abuse and neglect, do poorly in school, do time in jail and become teen parents themselves. Providing help and support to teen mothers is critical to improving not only their lives, but also to enhance the future prospects of their children. Fristers (friends and sisters) is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to equipping and empowering teen mothers, ages 13-25. Fristers seeks to prevent young moms from becoming another statistic and prevent their children from becoming victims of child abuse or repeating the same cycle of poverty and teen parenting. To accomplish this mission, Fristers offers a weekly support and education program that meets the needs of teen moms through a variety of means including one-on-one case management, classroom teaching, group projects and field trips, and relationship building activities. Fristers is an organization founded on Christian principles and open to moms of all faiths and backgrounds. No one is denied services for any reason. With the current economic condition of the State of California, resulting in the closure of many state sponsored services, a void is being created that is eliminating the safety net for many of these young moms and their children. The number of County social workers is being drastically reduced, those remaining are dealing with unrealistic case loads and a waiting list for some programs is now in place for young moms who need help. The role of Fristers in assisting young moms in our community during this difficult economic time is becoming even more vital. For most of these moms, Fristers is their only opportunity to receive the support and education they so desperately need. read less
